How can I go to Essex from Leeds to visit my ex-host family? By train or coach? How long and how much does it ?

I am a student in Leeds. How can I go to Essex from Leeds to visit my ex-host family? By train or coach? How long and how much does it take?

Depends whereabouts you are in Essex as to how much it would cost. The way to Leeds via train will require you going into London Liverpool St, and then across to Kings Cross from where you can get a train all the way to Leeds. You can do it avoiding London by going to Cambridge or Norwich and then onto Peterborough or Stevenage and ending up on the same train that would have started at Kings Cross, but it'd take a lot longer and may not save you that much money.

I would definitely consider getting a Railcard as well - you can get an 18-12 (formerly known as Young Persons's) Railcard for £20 that'll last a year and save you 33% off all train fares. So it'd only take a few journeys to get your money's worth, and train fares over long distances are not cheap. Make sure you travel offpeak if you can, an early morning start on a weekday will cost you an absolute fortune. You can get a saver return as well which will allow you to return any day within a month of your outward journey (as long as it's on an offpeak train - i.e. not early morning on a weekday).

As far as coaches go, your best bet is National Express. I haven't used it very often and don't know much of the details but their website's at the end of the link I've posted in the sources box.

You could try this:

Possibly more convenient and cheaper, just make sure that the person you share with is trustworthy, check their feedback etc.

Other than that the train is quicker but more expensive that the bus.

Have alook at the National Express website and then the Trainline website. Both will give you times, prices etc.
