I highly recommend reading the Twilight series before The Host, simply because Meyer is at her best in Twilight and I think you need that appreciation for her as a writer before you jump into other works.
Meyer strongly focuses on the unspoken relationship [both mental and physical] between people-exceptionally demonstrated in Twilight-and it just takes a little longer for her to get the ball rolling in The Host.
Most people [including myself] found it difficult to make it through the first 100-200 pages of The Host. The only thing that got me through that section was my trust in Meyer- and it payed off because I loved the book in the end.
Read the Twilight books first and then read The Host to hold you over until the Breaking Dawn release!
p.s. As far as The Host being an adult book- i saw no drastic shift from Twilight and think it better serves as a young adult book as well.
The Twilight Story is a wonderful romance about a vampire and a human.

I've read the Twilight series and it is by far my favorite book. I've heard the Host is good but not nearly as good as the Twilight series.

no it's jess S. just asked me that on the phone, it's not part of the twilight series, if you read either first it won't do any damage to either book so you shouldn't be confused about cross overs, but i did find that the beginning of "the host" was confusing it becomes way less confusing as you read more
The Host is not related to the Twilight series in any way. The Host is a really good book (although not as good as Twilight cuz nothing is). While Twilight is Young Adult and the Host is adult (I don't know why because there's A LOT more things in Twilight that would make it adult). But you should definitely read it. Right now it's my 2nd fave. #1 is a tie of all the twilight books now and to come!
