Can a pet fish identify his host?

I got a crowntail fighter fish 3 weeks ago and kept it in a fishbowl. It's quite playfull. This is my first pet fish.I want to know if a petfish can identify its host who is feeding him everyday.Besides, if exposed to some particular sound frequently, can they identify that sound and response to it?

Absolutely. A good example would be an Oscar. I had one for many years that would actually roll on its back and allow me to run my fingers across his stomach.

He hated my boyfriend, but had no problems with me or my brother when he would visit. Something (who knows what) allowed him to know when it was either me or my brother, or when it was boyfriend; and he *always* responded accordingly. To my boyfriend's dismay LOL. He was extremely playful, as well.

I'm happy to know you're enjoying your Crowntail!

I know a lot of fish hobbyist don't recommend this, but I always give a light/gentle tap on the top of the tank with my fingernail to signal "feeding time", mostly for the fish that like to hang in their hidey holes. A few of my larger fish start prancing around everytime I walk by the tank as well, so not sure if they necessarily recognize "me".

To poster Brandi -

Please shut up about your weird love affair with your dead fish that you obviously cannot support either with your money nor your creativity.

You are a murderer, and you displace your anger at your obvious shortcomings.

well I have absolutly NO scientific/statistacal info to say that they do BUT I feel my fish do, they know when I tick my fingernail on the palstic rim of the tank its feeding time...they all swim to the top & eagerly "kiss" the surface in anticipation.....they dont really seem to do this when my BF feeds them so to me it seem sthey do recogonize me @ least a bit

fish only associate your image with feeding time.

they dont actually know who or what you are.

thats why its commonly called fish keeping and not often having pet fish.

yes they can!!!! they can also recognize sound. If a fish is blind, they sense the vibrations on the floor and can tell who is who.

Most fish will recognize their owner, and will probably go nuts wanting you to feed them all the time. Our fish, especially our oscars come right up to the glass when they see us and will stay right in front of our faces. We have even trained them to eat from our hands. Fish can certainly hear some sound whether it be in the form of actually hearing it or vibrations that they feel. Don't think they will respond and recognize it though.

Edit:Can you say therapy?

My betta recognizes me, every time I walk into my room, he goes to the top and front of his tank and starts swimming there and waving himself around like of he's dancing. And if I open the little port on the hood of his tank, he sits still and looks up out of the water because he knows I am bout to feed him.

yes my goldfish wants to eat only when I walk by his tank, I have had him for over 3 years and have been the only one who feeds him

some say yes, some say no.....i like to believe that my fish know who i am.....they act like they do and its so cute. happy fishing.....

:)

I think since their lateral fins are so sensitive, if they really wanted to, they could between somebody of differnt weight and movements. Try to experiment. If there are other people around, make sure they don't feed your fish and only you do. And try seeing if the fish starts waiting expectantly for food when you walk around the bowl. And ignores everybody else if they walk around it.

Also, fish do NOT have a 3 second memory. That's only the goldfish, and that's even just popular belief i think.

Don't fish have a 3 second memory??

If not I'd say it would be close to that.

Fish run off instinct basically, they wouldn't recognise you from a turd floating in the water.
